The Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy is located in Donelson, TN (Nashville). Basic police school consists of a 12 week residential program. Trainees are housed on site and are released each weekend to go home.
RCSO participates in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. If you are vested in this system from a previous employer, your time in the system will continue to accrue after you’re employed with RCSO.
Certified positions are assigned an RCSO vehicle. Assigned vehicles may be taken to an employee’s home inside Rutherford County. If the employee resides in an adjoining county the employee may take the assigned vehicle home, provided they purchase supplemental insurance to cover the vehicle should an accident occur outside of the county. If the employee lives outside of Rutherford County or adjoining counties, the assigned vehicle may be parked in a secure (and approved) location in an adjoining county, provided the employee has purchased the required supplemental insurance.
Leave is accrued based on time of service. A new employee will accrue 8 hours of vacation and 8 hours of sick time per month. In addition, “personal time” is accrued for each recognized holiday, whether the employee works on the holiday or not. This time can be scheduled off by the employee subject to staffing requirements and supervisor approval.
Overtime is frequently offered and available in most divisions for hourly employees. Any time worked over 40 hours in a week is considered overtime and is paid at a rate of 1.5 times the employee’s base hourly rate.
RCSO provides all equipment needed for employees all divisions. This includes uniforms, duty gear, and vehicle (for those positions needing them). A annual allowance is given to each employee to spend as needed with our uniform provider.
RCSO has an “off duty” detail coordinator who utilizes a system called Off Duty Blue to post approved off duty details that are available to work. These duties vary in days, lengths, and shifts depending on the detail. The average pay rate for these off duty details is $40/hr. Off Duty Blue details are worked using your issued RCSO equipment and vehicle.
POST certified officers will receive an expedited training schedule. Out of State lateral transfers will also receive expedited training, but will also need to attend the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training School's Transition Training.
We no longer require applicants for patrol to be selected from our detention deputies. We hire straight to patrol as long as the applicant meets all hiring requirements and passes a background investigation.
We do not require all interviews to be held in person, please contact a recruiter if you want to request a zoom interview. During the background process we can expedite most paperwork and discussions through phone or internet. You will need to make a trip for a psychological and physical assessment once a conditional offer has been made.
